I would have to say that I have known Leo (Mr. Rich) most of my life. The Rich family and the Coop family were very early residents of Park Forest. Bill (my dad) and Mr. Rich were both friends and working acquaintances most of their adult lives. When I began working for the “family business”, a small sales promotion company, I was put in charge of art buying and periodically we would need a piece of finished illustration; Mr. Rich was the “go to” guy. It always felt awkward…he was Mr. Rich and I was “Jay”…but you put away your ego when you’re working with the best, and Mr. Rich was the best. Later, after Mr. Rich had retired and was teaching at the Park Forest art center, my eldest daughter had the good fortune to be able to take classes, from him, in the use of pastels. He will be greatly missed.

Well first Leo was a really loving emotional husband and Dad. I met him when I started dating Beanie in the 60’s on Warwick. So as a young guy you don’t think well I going to fall in love with the entire family but I sure did. Leo welcomed me with more than just open arms. He treated me practically like a son. We would kibitz together a lot, he had a fabulous sense of humor…sometimes almost cringe worthy!!!! We played golf together, had many wonderful conversations over dinner and that was height of the Vietnam War. We even went on a camping trip and he taught me how to shave, he though I wasn’t going with grain..so to speak. He never was bashful about sharing his opinions or making a wise crack. I remember one night Beanie and I were downstairs and he needed to get something from his studio, wasn’t for sure just what we were doing…so in booming voice he yelled “break it up down there”!!!!! We did, or whatever.
Over the years after moving out West didn’t get to see him often but when I did get back I always stopped my the house to see of course both Leo and Berniece what a wonderful pair they were so in love all the time.
I truly loved them both and all Beanie, Pat, Steve…thanks for sharing Leo with me. Will forever miss him.
